Nashville Predators' back-up (or third string) goaaltender Carter Hutton was awarded NHL.com's Third Star of the Week of December 9-15. Hutton went 3-0-0 last week with a 1.30 goals against average and .960 save percentage.
The twenty-seven year old native was signed as a free agent this summer to a one-year, $550,000 contract.
Hutton defeated the New York Rangers at Madison Square Garden Tuesday, stopping twenty-eight shots in a 4-1 victory. He improved Thursday night, making thirty-three saves in a 3-1 win at home against the Dallas Stars. Yet again he improved against the highly skilled San Jose Sharks, defeating them 3-2 in a thirty-six save effort.
Signing Hutton this summer was questionable, but it appears to be paying off. David Poile is making a lot of other general managers look silly, including Stan Bowman in Chicago for not giving Hutton the opportunity. Poile has done so and is paying off with his prized possession, Pekka Rinne, injured for the next few weeks.
