Predators Player Rankings – Week 1

Hello and welcome to what I hope will be a weekly feature for FangFaction this year. I'll be trying to make these based on performance, stats, fan opinion etc.

It's worth noting that based on the (gloomy) pre-season, this weeks Order is difficult to make, and done somewhat based on season expectations. I do hope you enjoy.

Player Position Rank Movement Short Description
Shea Weber D 1 N/A O Captain my Captain. Weber will lead the team defensively and hopefully chair our Powerplay again. Although still unclear who he will be paired with, the Captain is set for another big season
Pekka Rinne G 2 N/A Rinne will come out a hotter than he did last season, as he need not adjust from the KHL game. The All-Star tender will make another Vezina run as he takes on a high volume year
Mike Fisher C 3 N/A Will he be number one center? Or will he lose the position to Cullen. Hard to say, but Fisher needs to continue to play above mediocre hockey
Patric Hornqvist RW 4 N/A Suffering an early injury setback, Hornqvist should be on the ice in the opening week, if not opening night. He will be key in leading the offensive charge
Roman Josi D 5 N/A Whether he be leading the second pairing or joining the captain on the first line, Josi's play will likely justify his new contract
Colin Wilson C 6 N/A This could be the breakout year for Colin Wilson, who will likely find himself on the first line. Hopefully he can make all the time spent in Trot'z doghouse pay off
Matt Cullen C 7 N/A One of the many new Preds looks to show Smashville he is worth the risk. The Veteran shouldn't have difficulties adapting to the system, and can hopefully rack up some points
David Legwand C 8 N/A Legwand will likely be center to a two very young wingers. Perhaps a Forsberb-Legwand-Moser line? Who knows, but he's veteran play will help develop his young wing partners. Also look to see if he gets a few games on the Wing.
Gabriel Bourque LW 9 N/A Bourque could fall anywhere, but we will need him to contribute some points. He will be in high demand as one of the few Natural wingers on the roster. Expect him to move around the lineup until he finds some good chemistry.
Kevin Klein D 10 N/A The newly crowned assistant Captain will play big minutes this season. Klein needs some more consistency to his game
Filip Forsberg C 11 N/A The new Martin Erat. Forsberg will start with the Preds but is still on a two way contract. Fans will hope that his energy and skill will be enough to keep him in the Majors.
Matt Hendricks C 12 N/A Receiving a four year Predators Contract, this is the first we will see of Hendricks in Nashville. Can he live up to his good name in Washington. I for one hope he partakes in our first shooutout
Ryan Ellis D 13 N/A Is Ryan Ellis a bust? I'm not sure if he's lived up to his high draft pick. Will he finally see consistent play this year? I think he finally needs to prove himself this.
Paul Gaustad C 14 N/A Gaustad dropped the gloves quite a bit during the pre-season. He definitely needs to diversify his services or risk being a very expensive healthy scratch.
Seth Jones D 15 N/A We saw Jonathan Drouin sent back to Halifax on Sunday and with 7 defenders in the roster Jones isn't necessarily safe. Trotz will give him his chance, but with Ekholm, Bartley and Ellis looking for playing time, Jones can't be a liability
Craig Smith C 16 N/A Smith may spend another season playing on the wing. The kid needs to show some 'want' if he doesn't want to end up in the trade rumors.
Nick Spaling C 17 N/A Spaling is another center who may be boxed out this season. The Predators will want to keep him active as he is a good player, but who knows just how many minutes the season has in store for him
Victor Bartley D 18 N/A Bartley was a strong call up during the injury bug last season. He will start the year competing for the 6th defensive spot with Ekholm (and maybe Ellis and Jones)
Eric Nystrom LW 19 N/A Nystrom is another new addition to the Preds who will play on the gritty fourth line. The two way forward will rack up some penalty minutes and drop the gloves as needed
Simon Moser C 20 N/A Moser made the most of his pro-tryout to sign a Two way Contract with the Preds. But how long will the Undrafted Swiss national stay in the NHL? We'll wait and see.
Mattias Ekholm D 21 N/A Ekholm will finally make an NHL debut, but again as a 6th/7th defensement he will need to earn his ice time
Rich Clune LW 22 N/A Recent fan favorite Rich Clune will be fighting with the new acquisitions for ice time this year. Will is usefulness last year be undervalued given the grittier Preds roster this fall?
Carter Hutton G 23 N/A It looks like Hutton will be the NHL backup. Preds fans were hesitant to admit that Hutton would stay in the NHL when he was signed, but it looks like Korn and Trotz are convinced.
Viktor Stalberg LW 24 N/A Unfortunately injured in Pre-season and out for the first 2-3 weeks of October, fans eagerly await Stalberg's talent up-front.
