Predators Player Rankings – Week 7

Four games have gone by since the last Player rankings. The first of which was an amazing 6-4 win over the very good Colorado Avalanche. That was last Wednesday. Only a week ago. Seems like forever though right? The three games to follow have been one of the worst looking stretches I've ever seen from the Preds and we almost beat our goaless streak (but were saved by Hornqvist with two minutes to spare). We had consecutive back to back 5-0 losses to the low ranked New Jersey and the slightly better Jets. Then we lost 3-1 to the Islanders. It wasn't so much the losses – but did we ever look completely awful in each game.

The last five minutes of the Islanders game was decent – other than that it's been a desperately poor end to the week. The next few games only get more difficult.

Read the full player rankings below, and check out last weeks here.

Player Position Rank Movement Short Description
Patric Hornqvist RW 1 +1 Hornqvist saved us from tying a franchise record for longest time without scoring a goal. His goal also sparked some life in the Preds for the last five minutes of the NYI game. He oddly was pointless in the Colorado game. One of only two players to not have negative +/- (0) on the season
David Legwand C 2 -1 Three more assists this week for Legwand – two against Colorado and one against NYI. Tied at 24th in the league for assists.
Colin Wilson RW 3 +6 His four point game against Colorado is enough to leap frog him over an unproductive roster. He had 2G and 2A to power the team to their only win of the week
Eric Nystrom LW 4 +1 Nystrom was promoted to a makeshift top line with Legwand and Hornqvist. He didn't do much while there – but between that and his PK time he is earning a lot of minutes.
Nick Spaling C 5 +2 Spaling dressed for all four games – which should be considered a success for him. He hasn't done much point wise but he is consistently in the line up and doesn't cause many mistakes. He went 11-1 in faceoffs against COL
Craig Smith RW 6 +2 Smith had a goal against Colorado but was pretty bad the rest of the week. He went -4 against the Jets.
Roman Josi D 7 +2 Josi got line juggled onto the top pairing with Weber after shoddy performances from the Defense. He got an assists against Colorado and stayed a +/- of 0 in the drubbing to New Jersey
Shea Weber D 8 -5 Weber was – 7 this week, including a -2 in the 6-4 win over Colorado. He had an assist againsy NYI.
Kevin Klein D 9 +6 Klein was only -3 this week. He probably had the best defensive week of although staying on the 2nd line. He also had 5 shots on goal (Jones had 0, Weber 4)
Seth Jones D 10 -6 -6 on the week and demoted from the top pairing.
Mike Fisher C 11 -5 Fisher has been injured all week. Listed as Day to Day though and not on IR. Which is good I suppose.
Paul Gaustad C 12 -2 Gaustad had an average week with good hard play and more or less faceoff dominance. 83% in the draw against the Islanders.
Matt Cullen C 13 -3 I actually forgot we acquired him earlier today.
Gabriel Bourque LW 14 +4 Got an empty net goal and a child
Rich Clune RW 15 +6 We don't pay him to score goals – and he hasn't been scoring goals. He's had two fights this week trying to spur his team. Neither really worked.
Filip Forsberg RW 16 +3 Forsberg flipped Trotz the bird. Demoted to the AHL he got 1 goal and five assists in four games and was called back up. Hopefully he can spark the team a bit.
Viktor Stalberg LW 17 +3 Stalberg got a goal and an assist against Colorado, his first two points of the year, and then faded quietly back into obscurity.
Ryan Ellis D 18 -3 Ellis only played 9 minutes in the last game against the Islanders. He put a good shot on net on a power play though. I think he'll get benched Friday night.  Ryan Ellis the only other player to have a 0 +/- on the year.
Marek Mazanec G 19 NA Mazanec got called up from Milwaukee, came in as relief to Hutton against the Winnipeg and the played in the loss to NYI. He hasn't been phenomenal, but for a kid in sticky situation he's done well.
Mattias Ekholm D 20 -7 An assist and +3 against Colorado before going -1, -2, healthy scratch in his next three games. Bartley replaced him on Tuesday. We'll see when Ekholm makes his return.
Matt Hendricks LW 21 -5 Injured for two games and a walk to the dressing in another. Hendricks was a bit spotty this week. He did manage to stay out of the box in his two games though!
Victor Bartley D 22 +2 Bartley played 10:22 in his first game in the line up since Josi's return. He'll need to make the most of his opportunities going forward.
Taylor Beck RW 23 NA Called up from Milwaukee, didn't do much, sent back down to Milwaukee (likely … unless Fisher goes on retroactive IR)
Carter Hutton G 24 -5 I don't think any fan can say they are particularly happy with Hutton. He's let in 16 goals over the last 4 games.
Pekka Rinne G 25   IR for 4 weeks minimum.
Magnus Hellberg G 26   Was sent back to AHL. Not sure if the coaching staff wanted to see him in Milwaukee or wanted to see Mazanec take some time in the NHL.
