The fireworks began early but things slowed down quickly as the Nashville Predators shutout the New York Islanders by a score of 2-0.
Rich Clune dropped the gloves with Chris Bruton just 1:12 into the game. Matt Hendricks and Matt Carkner also dropped the mitts in the first period. The game settled down after than and the Preds led in shots 8-7 with the score deadlocked at zero through 20 minutes.
Just over three minutes into the second period, Gabriel Bourque broke the ice with a goal off a great feed from Filip Forsberg. Five minutes later, Austin Watson put home a goal to give the Predators a 2-0 lead and that was all they would need to seal the victory.
It was Pekka Rinne's preseason debut and he stopped all 13 shots he faced through two periods. Free Agent acquisition Carter Hutton played the third period and stopped all 12 shots thrown at him. The Preds put up 25 shots on Islanders goaltender Anders Nilsson.
1. Pekka Rinne
2. Gabriel Bourque
3. Seth Jones
Barry Trotz: "That was [Watson's] best game so far. He played really well."
"[Seth Jones] was a force today. He was fantastic."
"[Forsberg] has probably been one of the most consistent forwards through camp."
Next up, the Preds have their rematch against the Lightning on Tuesday at 7pm CT. Tampa Bay defeated Nashville last Thursday by a score of 5-1.
