REPORT: Poile to be named Team USA’s GM in Sochi

TSN's Bob McKenzie reported earlier Friday that Nashville Predators' General Manager David Poile was to be named GM of Team USA for the 2014 Olympic Winter Games held in Sochi, Russia. USA Hockey will make the announcement Saturday in New York City, although Dan Rosen of NHL.com reports it will be made Saturday, June 29. Along with the announcement forthcoming about Poile, coaches will be named as well.

For USA's Olympic silver medal winning team in 2010, Poile was assistant GM to Brian Burke, who is currently a scout for the Anaheim Ducks. But because Burke is no longer a GM, USA Hockey could not consider him for the job.

Just last month, Poile was a part of USA's management that overlooked the happenings during the 2013 World Championship in Helsinki and Stockholm.

If Poile completes next season as GM of the Predators, he will be the second longest tenured NHL GM at 32 years, surpassing Glen Sather of the Oilers and Rangers.

According to Hockey Canada President Bob Nicholson, a deal for players to play in next year's winter games should be announced in the next couple weeks if all things go well. The NHL, International Ice Hockey Federation and the Olympic commitee have yet to agree on NHLers playing in Sochi. However, it is a good sign that USA Hockey, Hockey Canada and Tre Kronor (Sweden's hockey organization) are carrying along as if it NHLers were able to play.
