I usually do not do this type of blogpost, but due to the lack of news involving the Nashville Predators, I have turned my attention the past several days to creating interactive maps of the world's hockey leagues. Of course, not every league is on there — for instance the AL-Bank Liga in Denmark, Get Ligaen in Norway, Elit. A in Italy and Ligue Magnus in France — but a majority of the world's leagues do have a map created for them.
Right now, the maps are not a finished product for what I have in store in the future. This is why…
The hot article when the NHL schedule was released was fellow-Preds blogger Dirk Hoag of On the Forecheck's NHL super schedule. It was nothing short of excellent, to say the least. Dirk also did a KHL super schedule several weeks ago, which has inspired me to expand the super schedule series. Why can't every major league have a super schedule like the NHL and KHL?
I find travel in various leagues quite interesting, as a geographical nerd. However, do not expect a super schedule to be put together prior to the start of the leagues' seasons. Maybe not next year, either. But definitely in the near future a super schedule will be put together for the unnoticed leagues throughout the world.
The maps I have done so far are the NHL, KHL, AHL, ECHL, CHL, OHL, QMJHL, WHL, NCAA DI, SM-liiga, SHL (formerly known as the Elitserien), Allsvenskan, Czech Extraliga, National League A (Switzerland), DEL (Germany), EIHL (United Kingdom) and Asia League.
Not only does it locate the teams, but I have compiled their arena capacity. Soon, I plan on compiling all the capacity data together and rank the stadiums by capacity in a spreadsheet.
It certainly took time to put these together. If you have any comments or questions about the map, how I can improve it, what I plan to do with it or any requests to do other maps, just let me know either in the comments section below or on Twitter.
Without further ado, here are the maps of the leagues. Bare in mind, this is an unfinished product, but with constructive feedback, I can certainly make the maps as perfect as possible.
If you want to calculate the travel, go to Google Maps and copy & paste the address of the teams.
