The Fangover: Preds nearly piss away lead; defeat Senators 4-3 in OT

Seth Jones' overtime game-winner gave the Nashville Predators their first win in five games. Nashville defeated the Ottawa Senators 4-3 in overtime Monday at Canadian Tire Centre in the first of back-to-back road games.

The game shouldn't have gone into overtime, as Nashville possessed a three goal lead entering the third period. Second period goals from Nick Spaling (8:20) and Craig Smith (10:00), 1:40 apart, and Eric Nystrom at 17:32. Spaling and Smith's goal were almost exact replicas of each other, a shot from the point being deflected between the hash-marks before entering the net. Spaling's goal ended Nashville's scoreless streak at 150:42. Nystrom's goal should be credited to Spaling for forcing Marc Methot to turn the puck over, before Nystrom snapped a shot past Craig Anderson's glove.

With 20 minutes left to play in regulation, the Predators had the difficult task of keeping the "most dangerous lead in hockey."

Ottawa netminder Anderson's night would end, but not because he was pulled by head coach Paul MacLean. After being dinged with a Shea Weber shot in the left shoulder 7:15 into the game, teammate Milan Michalek made contact with Anderson's left arm with 15:50 to play in regulation. Anderson, unable to finish the game, went to the locker room and was replaced by backup Robin Lehner. Anderson ended the night with 30 saves. Coming in relief, Lehner made 12 stops on 19:39 of play.

With Lehner's entrance, Ottawa woke up. The aforementioned dangerous three goal lead would bite the Predators, as the Senators were biting away at the lead in the third.

Lack of defensive awareness by Viktor Stalberg led to goals from defensemen Jared Cowen and Marc Methot at 7:55 and 10:34, respectively, to cut the Nashville lead to one with plenty of time to force the game into overtime. The Sens would do so.

Senators captain Jason Spezza scored the game-tying goal with 1:07 left on the clock. It was clear that the hometown team had all the momentum going for them entering overtime.

However, it would be the away team who would come away victorious. Nashville was able to take advantage of a defensive breakdown as Ryan Ellis went on a breakaway, with plenty of time to make any move he wanted, while Jones trailed behind. Ellis was stopped by Lehner's right leg, but Jones was there to put away the rebound with 1:11 to play in OT to give the Preds a 4-3 win.

Pekka Rinne made 34 saves in his first win since returning from injury. Of the 34 stops, none were better than his robbery on Erik Karlsson in the first period.

During the 1st intermission interview, Karlsson told TSN, " It was a remarkable save. I have nothing else to say. Just tip your hat and say 'Congrats.'"

With the win, Nashville has a 0,5% chance at clinching a wildcard birth in the Western Conference, but sitting 8 points out. A win against Buffalo would increase their chances and possibly regain hope for some of the loyal fans. I, however, am not hopeful and am looking for the offseason to roll around.

Notes:

With 9:39 to go in the 1st period, Weber's shot injured Cody Ceci badly. The shot hit Ceci's right side of the face and suffered "facial lacerations," despite wearing a visor. Ceci did not return.
