The Fangover: Smith hits 20-goal milestone in 4-1 win against Sabres

For the first time this season since January 28 and 31, the Nashville Predators have won two straight games. Monday evening, Nashville came away with a 4-3 overtime road victory against the Ottawa Senators. Tuesday, the Predators defeated the Buffalo Sabres 4-1 at First Niagara Center.

Nashville entered the game slow and groggy, looking just like a team who played the night before and had to travel. They took two minor penalties in the first five minutes of the game, allowing Buffalo to possess an early lead.

The Sabres took advantage 2:09 in with a Drew Stafford rebound goal to give his club a 1-0 lead in his 500th career NHL game.

The Predators would respond with a three goal outburst.

In the Preds' last five games (1-4-0), they were 0-for-18 with the man advantage prior to Tuesday's meeting. A hot Nick Spaling scored a power play goal to tie the game at 17:10 of the first period, putting the bugaboo to rest. Spaling, who scored Monday in Ottawa via deflection, was credited with a goal after the puck hit off his right leg and in. The goal was reviewed, but stood as called. According to Rule 78.4, "If an attacking player has the puck deflect into the net, off his skate or body, in any manner, the goal shall be allowed."

Spaling has 10 points (6 goals, 4 assists) in his past 12 games.

The momentum would carry over despite the intermission. Shea Weber sniped Jhonas Enroth high glove side for the go-ahead, game-winner at 3:33 of the second period.

Craig Smith notched a milestone at the 7:51 mark later in the period. For the first time in Smith's career, he has hit the 20-goal mark off an outstanding feed from Colin Wilson. Smith put the Predators up 3-1 with plenty of time to play. The thoughts of the game the night before had to be running through their mind. They could not afford to not get two points against the worst team in the league.

A frustrated Zenon Konopka collided knee-on-knee with Viktor Stalberg with 10:40 to play in the second. Defending his teammate, Paul Gaustad dropped the gloves with Konopka. After things were settled out, Gaustad received an minor for instigating, major for fighting, and ten minute misconduct, while Konopka was given just a major.

To seal the game with 1:31 to go, former-Sabre Gaustad scored the empty-netter to give the Preds a 4-1 win.

In his first start since six games ago in Winnipeg, Carter Hutton was efficient enough to get his 15th win of the season. Hutton made 24 saves, but none bigger than on Tyler Ennis in the second period on a bang-bang play in tight.

Nashville now sees their playoff hopes increase just a bit with this win. The next two games will be extremely challenging, as they head to Chicago Friday and return home to play St. Louis Saturday. The goal will be to get at least two points out of those games.
