Many are calling Devan Dubnyk the "goalie of the future" for the Edmonton Oilers. Of course this thought fits right into the foundation of the current Oilers with their young skaters up front. The 26 year old is making his way through the National Hockey League slowly, but surely.
During the NHL's work stoppage, Dubnyk was selected by Hockey Canada to represent his country in between the pipes at the Spengler Cup in Switzerland. He was able to make his country proud by leading the way to victory.
Despite doing well for Team Canada, Dubnyk returned to Edmonton with similar problems as last season. Inconsistency between the pipes has been a killer for the club and could hurt their chances towards making it to the postseason with a highly skilled team in front of him. Once Dubnyk starts to show consistency in his game, he will become one of the top ten goalies in the league.
Being 6'5" doesn't hurt at all. The Saskatchewan native can take up a large chunk of the net without moving as much. However, many scouts feel Dubnyk should work on his mobility while on his feet. On his knees, Dubnyk has solid movement, which is what he relies on when trying to stop pucks. If he does so, people will see a Dubnyk similar to goalies like Semyon Varlamov.
Here is how to beat Devan Dubnyk.
- High blocker side: Since Dubnyk falls to his knees easily, it leaves high blocker side easy for any shooter to score at. It is tough to get a blocker resting on the leg pad to the shoulder in less than half a second.
- Catch him out of position: Quick shooting will surprise Dubnyk, so players will have to release early and often while he is on his feet.
